About Cyprus
A Beautiful Place to Live
There is an island that is thought by many to be the most beautiful in the whole of the world. It is set in a startling blue ocean and has a history that could be the history of the world. There does not seem to be a nationality that has not in some way succumbed to the charms of this island. The people of the island has taken what they need from every conqueror and every influence and made it their own. Somehow they have managed to turn these influences into a culture that is not to be found anywhere else. It is true there is a strong Greek influence but it is said that whoever visits Cyprus will find something that is familiar. The people of the island have a strong seafaring history and the islanders are a resilient and tough group who have withstood the test of time.
Over the centuries there has always been a huge amount of bickering as to which nation would rule this little island paradise. All these conquerors have come and gone and the people of Cyprus who regard themselves as Cypriots still remain to tell the wonderful tales about their history that has influenced the history of the world. If ever there was a people that had staying power it is the people of Cyprus. Any person who was interested in the history of civilisation would not be able to ignore the influence of this small island. Cyprus has played host to many of the world's greatest civilisations and through this little seafaring nation the best of world civilisations has spread throughout the world. Because of the situation of the world the influence did spread West as well as East. Cyprus is really the crossroads of many civilisations and cultures.
The island of Cyprus is a very exotic mix of the world's past and present cultures. This is to be seen in the faces of the people. When you see the Cypriots it is very hard to place them you just know they look familiar. They are known for their warm hospitality and hardworking nature. Cyprus has become a firm favourite for what is regarded as one of the best holiday destinations in the world. Visitors flock to Cyprus from the United Kingdom and Europe. The island is conveniently close and these nationalities do not have to endure many hours of travel. The Cypriot sunshine and beaches are exactly what a cold and wet United Kingdom and Europe winter wants. There is a strong ex-pat community living in Cyprus. This makes it a lot easier for all visitors who speak English to settle in when visiting the island. Many of the islanders do speak English and if you are a visitor you will not find it hard to get around due to any language barriers.
The island is referred to as the birthplace of Aphrodite a Goddess in Greek mythology; with the same beauty and splendour as the goddess it is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Cyprus combines the more recent presence of Turkey in the north and in the South; it is the pure Greek culture that prevails. Conflicts in the political arena are still to this day somewhat irksome, but rarely flow into the enjoyment of visitors to the island alike and rather add to the diverse, rich and interesting culture and history of the island. It is possible for visitors to move across to the Turkish side and many curios visitors to the island do this. However, it must be pointed out that the Greek end of the island is a lot more sophisticated. The amenities that are situated on the Turkish side are more rudimentary. But the prices are cheaper and it is possible to get an excellent meal in the Turkish style. The people are known to be friendly and eager to please. It must be said that when crossing the border you do not need to have a passport and visa. It is always advisable to check with the authorities before proceeding. It is mostly to the Greek side of the island that visitors flock to enjoy a holiday.
Visitors are welcomed by the traditionally friendly Cyprus folk, who consider their island to be a gift to you. They offer genuine hospitality, what they call in the Greek language 'Philoxenia', which means friendship towards the guest. This is very true when it comes to welcoming visitors from all over the world to their island and home. This is a rather quaint and different attitude compared to the reserved UK and European visitors. The pace in which the Island flows is leisurely, and most visitors are greeted with warm smiles everywhere they go and visit on the island. But do not mistake the Cypriots as lazy people, they have always been hard workers, who love their island and work hard to maintain the splendour and beauty of it through the colourful history the island of Cyprus has. There is so much to learn about this island that if you know a little bit it is exciting to actually be able to see the sites that you have heard so much about.
The very ancient story of Cyprus goes that Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, chose the island of Cyprus to rise from the sea into all her glory and splendour, and the island proudly honours this tale by offering tasteful recreations of the day Aphrodite came to life. This has arisen because of the islander's great pride in their special legends and a means of entertaining the many visitors to the island. There is a great number of interesting festivals take place during the course of the year. The Cypriots celebrate almost any event that is possible and of course the visitors have to celebrate with them. This is one of the examples of the festive atmosphere that is alive and well on the island of Cyprus. The native language is Greek, but in most hotels, shops and restaurants, you will hear the English language spoken with grace. If you are a visitor you would not have to master the Greek language in order to feel comfortable. There just is not the burden of learning a new language before going to visit this beautiful island. You can be assured that your English will be understood. A wonderful aspect of the Cypriot lifestyle is that local crime is almost non existent on the island. This does make it even more appealing to those of us who have to live behind burglar bars and security gates from day to day. It will surely be the ultimate not having to worry about locked doors and gates for a few days.
Cyprus boasts the most beautiful mountains. There are many small and undisturbed villages filled with kind and friendly faces. If you want white flawless beaches then Cyprus is one of the best locations. You will find peace and a leisurely pace of living in the villages. But if you do want to have a somewhat quicker pace then there are modern towns bursting with things to do. There are also luxurious hotels that are as good as any in the world. The countryside of Cyprus is unspoiled and the climate is perfect.
